How to Talk to a Liberal

Talking to a liberal is no more or less difficult than talking to a conservative. It's simply a question of understanding different viewpoints and having respect for them all, regardless of which side of the political and social spectrum you fall on. Follow these steps to better talk to a liberal.

Instructions

    • 1

Apprehend that a liberal viewpoint cannot be pigeonholed easily. It's a good idea to avoid presuming that just because a person is a liberal, he believes in certain ideologies. What is important when talking to a liberal person is to appreciate that his ideas are relevant and valid.

    • 2

Create an environment of conversation in which you can actually learn from and exchange ideas with your liberal friend. So many times, when people imagine that someone is either liberal or conservative, they begin to either argue with them over petty nonsense or be flippant about their ideas. To create a dialogue--a give and take--with someone is the key to talking to a liberal or anyone else.

    • 3

Express differences of opinion with respect and consideration. No one should expect to be agreed with at all times. The wise person does not do so. To have a better conversation with a liberal, you should express any difference of opinion in an honest and open fashion. But do so with decorum and politeness.

    • 4

Engage your liberal friend in a conversation that has nothing to do with politics or sociology. Sometimes, it's best to simply avoid such topics when it's obvious that disagreement is likely. It's easy enough to choose topics such as film, art or literature.

    • 5

Go to an exhibit or art opening together and discuss the artist's work rather than the state of the world. Somehow, these kinds of conversations are all-too-frequently overlooked as important and valid.
