How to Accessorize a Red Dress

A red dress can steal the attention away from the rest of your outfit, but that doesn't mean you should skip the accessories. When choosing your shoes, purse and earrings, you should pick accessories that complement your dress rather than compete with it.

1. Ask yourself during which season and at what time of day you'll be wearing your dress. Stick with light colored accessories, such as white or cream, during the spring and summer. Dark colors, such as brown and black, can be worn during the fall and winter. If you're wearing the dress during the day, you can wear sandals in the summer or boots in the winter. For night events, wear heels or pumps.

2. Add a cardigan or pashmina that matches the color of your shoes if you're going to be outside. You can add this extra layer for night events, as well.

3. Choose a handbag or purse that matches the exact color of your dress. If this isn't possible, match the color of your shoes. Don't carry a handbag that's the same color but a different tone. The lighter piece will look washed out.

4. Consider wearing metallic shoes and jewelry for events such as weddings, balls and ceremonies.

5. Wear a brooch or your favorite necklace to embellish a simple dress.

6. Experiment with knee-high boots and chunky jewelry to achieve a funky look.
