Keeping kids busy is a challenge. When you see the summer boredom set in, entertain the kids with an art project. Get out the egg cartons and pipe cleaners and teach the kids to make an egg carton spider.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Black tempera paint
  • Paintbrush
  • 4 black pipe cleaners
  • 2 wiggly eyes
  • Glue
  1. Step 1

Cut one cup from the cardboard egg carton. You need one cup for each spider. Each dozen-sized egg carton makes 12 spiders.

  2. Step 2

Paint the cup with black tempera paint. Cover the entire surface of the egg cup and let the paint dry.

  3. Step 3

Snip four black pipe cleaners in half with the scissors.

  4. Step 4

Poke eight holes in the bottom of the cardboard egg cup. There need to be four holes on each side of the egg cup, where the spider's legs go.

  5. Step 5

Insert each pipe cleaner from Step 3 into a hole in egg cup to make the legs. Bend the pipe cleaner upward inside the cup to help it stay in place. Bend the portion on the outside of the cup down so it looks like a spider leg. Repeat the process for each of the eight pipe cleaners.

  6. Step 6

Put two small dots of glue on the front of the egg cup. Place the wiggly eyes on top of the glue. Allow the glue to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a silver or white paint marker to draw on a mouth.
  • Embellish the egg carton spider with silver or gold glitter to make it more interesting.
  • Make a spider web out of stretched cotton to display the spiders. These make great Halloween decorations.
