Step 1
Check your rear view mirror as you approach the open parking spot. Make sure there isn't a car directly behind you before you begin slowing down. If there's a car behind you, check if the car has enough room to pass you. If it's a one-lane road or there's no room, circle the block and come back to the parking space.

Step 2
Slow down gradually as you approach the parking spot after you turn on your signal to indicate you'll be parking. Down shift your transmission to help slow your car. Don't just coast with the clutch pushed down.

Stop your vehicle when it's parallel with the car in front of the open parking space. Be sure to leave at least a foot between your car and the parked vehicle. Shift into reverse.

Look at all of your mirrors to check for obstructions or people walking behind you. Turn around to check your blind spots before you begin to back up.

Turn your steering wheel toward the curb and begin backing up. Slowly release the clutch as you press the gas. If you're parking on a hill, you can leave the clutch engaged and gradually let your foot off the brake so the car slowly rolls backward.

Step 6
Steer away from the curb once your car is halfway in the parking space to straighten your vehicle out in the space. Continue backing up as you do this.

Step 7
Shift into first gear once your car is straight in the parking space. Pull forward until there is reasonable space between your vehicle and cars near you.

Step 8
Pull your steering wheel to the right so your tires are against the curb. Keep your car in first gear and set the parking brake.
