Technology changes everything overnight. No where is this more evident than in the cell phone industry. Once phones were the size of suitcases, and now they can fit into your pocket. Still, there are some challenges that cell phones face. International phone calling is one final frontier for the cell phone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Understand cell phone standards throughout the world. Different countries use different cell phone standards to transmit calls. The standards include PSTN, CDMA, AMPS or GSM networks.
Step2
Determine your budget for international service. This will be a factor in choosing the best option. Costs will be in direct proportion to coverage and length of calls.
Step3
Rent a cell phone when you arrive at your destination country. Rental phones are available in most countries. Take a phone card or SIMS card from an existing phone and transfer it to a rented phone if you want to use the same phone number.
Step4
Use a satellite phone. Satellite phones often have multiple signal capabilities. Using a satellite phone will ensure that the phone can adapt to more than one signal type throughout the world.
Step5
Choose an international cell phone provider. CellularAbroad rents cell phones and charges for usage at varying rates per minute, depending on what country you are in (see Resources below). WorldCell offer worldwide cell phone service through cell and satellite phones (see Resources below).
