Step 1
Decide what wood you would like to simulate. There are so many different types and colors of wood. Find a log of the type of color you want and use it to pick your colors.

Find your foundation. This color will be the main shade of your wood grain effect. Other colors will show up as well, but this will be the base. This paint will be the largest amount that you put into your airbrush.

Pick your highlight and lowlight colors. These different colors will help to make the wood grain effects look real by creating streaks of different colors in the paint.

Select your top coat. This is a translucent coat that helps seal in your wood grain effects. Choose any translucent paint that won't affect the colors you used to create the wood grain look.

Practice airbrushing to achieve the desired effect. Airbrush wood grain effects onto a surface similar ot the item you plan to airbrush. This will help you determine if you like the planned colors of the wood grain effects. If you don't like the practice sample, get some new paint colors and give it another try.
