on 11/22/2005 When moving your mark to the side (to get it out of someone else's line), you must mark the ball first, then move your mark by picking out an object off the green to align with, placing your putter head next to your ball marker and then moving the marker. If you do this another way, you are technically illegally marking your ball and will incur a penalty.

on 11/22/2005 If your ball is in a position where it is visually distracting, or in the path of a ball, mark your ball out. Pick a visual spot on or off the green, put putter head near the ball, then adjust the handle so club points at the spot. Mark at end of grip.
