Notice where golf balls are located around the green.

Tips & Warnings
Try not to step in another player's putting line as you mark your ball.
Players must mark their ball in its exact location before picking it up, or a two-stroke penalty will occur.

If your ball is in a position where it is visually distracting, or in the path of a ball, mark your ball out. Pick a visual spot on or off the green, put putter head near the ball, then adjust the handle so club points at the spot. Mark at end of grip.
