Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pull the ascot around the back of the neck as you would a tie. Let the left end hang a little more than two inches longer than the right.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the left end one and a half times over the right. Continue around, as if you were going to complete a second turn, and push the left end up, through the neck loop, so that it emerges over the top.

  3. Step 3

Center the top flap so that it is the only visible portion of the ascot. Spread the sides slightly, creating a "waterfall" of fabric from the base of your neck. Shallow creases should be visible.

  4. Step 4

Undo the top button of your shirt. Tuck the ends of the ascot into the mouth of your shirt and center it.

  5. Step 5

Secure the ends of the ascot with a stick pin if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider your options: Pair an ascot with a tuxedo for a unique formal look, or wear it under a button-down shirt and a blazer or sport coat for a dressy look.
  • Contrast colors. Pair a lighter-colored ascot with a dark shirt, and a dark-colored ascot with a light shirt and dark jacket.
  • Keep the fabrics consistent. Wool and cashmere blends complement a heavy tweed sport coat, while a silk ascot will be dashing with a lightweight wool blazer.
  • An ascot looks awkward and silly when paired with a crewneck shirt or any sweater.

on 9/1/2008 I learned about ascots in Germany in the early 60s. Now, being a laryngectomee I found it perfect for someone like me. I just received my newest one from Italy. It is for my grandson's wedding. It is Burgandy to match my wifes dress.

Ascots are great! They're colorful and functional. They keep my neck warm in winter and all the gals staring. Guys, too.
