Drivers can avoid harming child pedestrians by learning and following a few simple traffic safety rules.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Look carefully for children on foot or on bicycles when backing out of a driveway or exiting a garage.
Step2
Slow down and be alert for children in neighborhoods with school zones.
Step3
Be on the lookout for children walking in streets that lack sidewalks.
Step4
Watch for children playing near or waiting at bus stops.
Step5
Drive carefully in neighborhoods where children might dart out from behind a parked car, either on foot or on a bike.
Step6
Observe the flashing signal lights that school buses use to warn drivers. Flashing yellow signals an imminent stop, while flashing red means the bus is loading or unloading children. Drivers must stop their cars until the red lights stop flashing and the bus starts moving again.

on 11/22/2005 first of all, do not honk at them because it hurts people's ears. park your car the other way so you don't have to risk backing up and not see who's behind you.

on 11/22/2005 Look for feet - big or little. It means there's someone standing between the vehicles. People (kids especially) don't come "out of nowhere." You just have to know where to look for the clues and adjust your speed accordingly.
