Plants get dirty just like anything else around the house. Clean your plants whenever you clean the room; keeping them clean will help them live longer.
Inspect your plant. If it has been neglected and is dried up and covered in dust and dirt, it isn't worth cleaning. Throw it out.
Step2
Use a damp cloth or a feather duster to wipe away dirt or dust on a healthy plant.
Step3
Mix a solution of 1 qt. warm water with 1/2 c. nonfat milk. Wash each leaf individually with a sponge. Don't forget to wash the undersides of the leaves, too; insects love to hide under there.
Step4
Use a commercial plant-cleaning product as directed to clean leaves and make them shine.
Tips & Warnings
Use warm water in your milk mixture; cold water shocks the plant.
Skim milk gives a slight shine to the leaves but doesn't leave an odor like whole milk.

The best way to clean your houseplants is to put them outdoors on a rainy day. You will be amazed how clean rain water will get them. Plus, I've noticed when I put my houseplants out in the rain they become greener and healthier. I think rain water is really good for houseplants. You must try this!

My Mum used to do this, and the tradition has stuck with me too! Use Non-scented, sensitive Baby Wipes to clean the leaves, it works a treat, and leaves them shiny. No mess, just throw the wipes away

Use a solution of 1/3 liquid fabric softener to 2/3 water in a spray bottle. Spray the leaves heavily with the solution. The dirt slips off the leaves and leaves them shining like new. It also leaves a pleasant smell on the plants!

Instead of just watering your houseplants, place them in your shower and give them a good "rainfall." I usually come back later in the day after they have drained to put them back around the house. Watered and cleaned in one step.
