Dirty blades can make ceiling fans shake and wobble. To keep them running smoothly, clean them often.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • All-purpose Cleaners
  • Long-handled Feather Dusters
  • Paper Towels
  • Ladders

Step1
Turn the ceiling fan off.
Step2
Position a tall stepladder beneath the fan in a place that will allow easy access to the blades.
Step3
Carefully climb the ladder and turn the fan blades until one is within easy reach.
Step4
Spray all-purpose cleaner onto a paper towel.
Step5
Wipe away dirt and dust from the top of the fan blade with the moistened paper towel.
Step6
Turn the blades until another dirty blade is within reach.
Step7
Spray a fresh paper towel with cleaner and wipe the blade's surface.
Step8
Continue the above process until each blade is clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fans should be cleaned thoroughly this way at least every two months. For weekly maintenance, dust the blades with a long cloth or feather duster.
  • Brass and metal fixtures should be cleaned separately with cleaning solutions appropriate to their composition.
  • Never clean fan while it is in motion.
  • Avoid exposing fan's motor to all-purpose cleaner.

on 1/4/2006 Buy dry hydrostatic cloths (Swiffer or Polar dry dusting cloth refills go for $2.00 at Family dollar stores) and wipe the blades. No flying dust and no grime caused by wet dust. I go over my TV, books, wood surfaces then do the fan last in each room. One cloth will do a whole living room--save the dirtiest surfaces for last.

on 11/22/2005 Use a Pledge Grab-It to clean ceiling fan blades, mini blinds, shutters and the top of the refrigerator. No dust flying around; no dirt streaks, sticky mess or dirty water to deal with. And when you're done, just throw it away!
