How to Clean a Ceiling Fan

Dirty blades can make ceiling fans shake and wobble. To keep them running smoothly, clean them often.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • All-purpose Cleaners
  • Long-handled Feather Dusters
  • Paper Towels
  • Paper Towels
  • Ladders

  1. Step 1

    Turn the ceiling fan off.

  2. Step 2

    Position a tall stepladder beneath the fan in a place that will allow easy access to the blades.

  3. Step 3

    Carefully climb the ladder and turn the fan blades until one is within easy reach.

  4. Step 4

    Spray all-purpose cleaner onto a paper towel.

  5. Step 5

    Wipe away dirt and dust from the top of the fan blade with the moistened paper towel.

  6. Step 6

    Turn the blades until another dirty blade is within reach.

  7. Step 7

    Spray a fresh paper towel with cleaner and wipe the blade's surface.

  8. Step 8

    Continue the above process until each blade is clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fans should be cleaned thoroughly this way at least every two months. For weekly maintenance, dust the blades with a long cloth or feather duster.
  • Brass and metal fixtures should be cleaned separately with cleaning solutions appropriate to their composition.
  • Never clean fan while it is in motion.
  • Avoid exposing fan's motor to all-purpose cleaner.

on 1/4/2006 Buy dry hydrostatic cloths (Swiffer or Polar dry dusting cloth refills go for $2.00 at Family dollar stores) and wipe the blades. No flying dust and no grime caused by wet dust. I go over my TV, books, wood surfaces then do the fan last in each room. One cloth will do a whole living room--save the dirtiest surfaces for last.

on 11/22/2005 Use a vacuum cleaner attachment to keep the dust clumps from hitting the floor. You may need a ladder.

on 11/22/2005 Use a Pledge Grab-It to clean ceiling fan blades, mini blinds, shutters and the top of the refrigerator. No dust flying around; no dirt streaks, sticky mess or dirty water to deal with. And when you're done, just throw it away!
