Vacuuming doesn't always restore a carpet's clean appearance. For heavily soiled carpets, shampooing is recommended, rather than spot-cleaning. Wet-cleaner machines spray and remove hot detergent solution while cleaning the carpet. Here are a few steps to get your carpet looking clean as new.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Purchase or rent a wet-cleaner machine also known as a steamer, at a hardware or grocery store. When you rent a machine, the necessary cleaning products are usually included or can be purchased at the rental store.
Step2
Vacuum the floor thoroughly.
Step3
Spray heavily soiled areas with prespray or traffic-lane cleaner. For really dirty areas, increase the amount of prespray used instead of increasing the amount of carpet shampoo.
Step4
Fill the machine's hose or reservoir with hot tap water.
Step5
Use the machine and carpet shampoo according to the steamer manufacturer's instructions.
Step6
Maximize the amount of water removed from the carpet by making a water-extraction pass with the water spray on, and then again with the spray off. Test the carpet with your hand. If your hand comes away with water droplets, extract again with the spray off; if your hand comes away damp and the carpet feels wrung out, you have extracted correctly.
Step7
Wait overnight for the carpet to dry before walking on it. To dry thoroughly, open windows and use fans.

Tips & Warnings

  • Special solutions are available to treat pet stains and odors.
  • To help your cleaning last longer, neutralize detergent residue left on the carpet by steaming with a vinegar-water rinse made up of 1 c. vinegar and 1 gallon water.
  • Oversaturating the carpet can cause water to soak through and damage the floor underneath.

on 7/10/2008 Good info on carpet cleaning, but you should check with the carpet manufacture to make sure cleaning it yourself does not void your warranty. Starting in January 2008, Shaw Industries the worlds largest carpet manufacture is requiring only IICRC certified cleaning companies to clean the carpets in order to maintain their carpet warranty. Check out our carpet cleaning process video at: http://www.alliedcarpetcleaning.com

on 3/10/2008 a better smelling chemical then vinegar and safer then fabric softener is available at carpet cleaning supply stores (I know it seems less diy but it's only 12-15 bucks) it's called all fiber rinse or carpet rinse. The smell is like baby powder and many cleaners just steam with this slightly low ph rinse aid. Most spots don't need detergent anyway just rinseing. I have heard off doing 2 steam prcesses but usually it's one or the other because the carpet gets to wet. So if your carpet is stiff with residue stains do this rinse method it will dry soft and bright with no returning soil from residue. It's cheap and a good spotter for brownout to.

on 9/29/2007 With my experience, I think Hugh's comment (above) is really good -- apply the cleaner with a sprayer/mister first, then use only hot water in the extractor. I have also found OxyClean to work wonders. Tip -- I also found a cheap Oxy type multipurpose spray solution at the dollar store for only $1 (near the glass cleaner)-- was AMAZED at how well the stuff cleans spots on the carpet.
