Remove Mildew Stains From Tile

Nasty mildew doesn't have to ruin your bathing experience. Here's how to get it out.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove as much mildew as possible by spraying the area with tile cleaner and scrubbing with a toothbrush or stiff-bristled brush.

  2. Step 2

Squirt persistent mildew with a solution of commercial bleach and water (1 part bleach to 10 parts water is usually effective).

  3. Step 3

Leave the room and allow the solution to work for 5 to 10 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Return and rinse with water.

Tips & Warnings
  • If, despite your efforts, mildew remains on your tiles, consider purchasing a commercial mildew remover containing sodium hypochlorite and sodium carbonate, or try a grout coloring agent to hide stains.
  • When handling bleach, wear gloves and keep the room well-ventilated.
  • If your shower doors or tracks are made of a material that will scratch easily, use only recommended cleaners and avoid harsh scrubbing.
