Since your obstetrician will play an important role in your prenatal care as well as in the delivery of your baby, this decision is well worth your time and energy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Health Insurance
  1. Step 1

Research the type of birth you want to have: home, water or hospital.

  2. Step 2

Ask for references from friends, family and co-workers.

  3. Step 3

Interview at least three obstetricians if possible. Discuss issues important to you and choose an obstetrician who meets your needs.

  4. Step 4

Check with your insurance company to verify coverage.

  5. Step 5

Make sure that the hospital the doctor is affiliated with can accommodate your birthing wishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask how many doctors will be in the rotation, because if you like one particular obstetrician in a practice of ten, there is only a one-in-ten chance you will get her on your delivery day.
  • Make sure you will be able to get in touch with the obstetrician or her office at any time, day or night.
  • Consider a midwife in addition to or instead of an obstetrician if you want to have qualified person with you throughout labor from the beginning to end. A midwife will come to the hospital or be with you at home.
  • If at any point you find that you do not relate to your obstetrician or that he or she is not meeting your needs, consider getting a new doctor.

on 9/23/2008 Obstetrics is a surgical specialty, and only 10% of pregnant women (high risk) actually need one. For the other 90%, a midwife is a great choice, especially if you want a home or water birth!
