Cook Brussels Sprouts

Some people hate brussels sprouts - they do have an assertive flavor. But others of us have grown to love the bold little cabbages.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place brussels sprouts in a bowl of lukewarm water.

  2. Step 2

Soak them for 10 minutes to get rid of any sand or insects in the leaves.

  3. Step 3

    Rinse the sprouts thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Cut off the stems, but not so much that the leaves fall off.

  5. Step 5

Cut a small X into the base of each sprout to allow the core to cook thoroughly.

  6. Step 6

Boil brussels sprouts for 7 to 10 minutes.

  7. Step 7

Steam brussels sprouts for about 5 minutes.

  8. Step 8

Microwave brussels sprouts, with a little water, for 5 to 8 minutes.

  9. Step 9

Try brussels sprouts with maple butter - a good way to tame their bitterness. Brussels sprouts are also tasty with mustard butter.

  10. Step 10

Finely chop cooked brussels sprouts and toss them with cooked pasta or add them to omelettes or frittatas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make mustard butter by blending 1/4 c. soft butter with 2 tsp. Dijon mustard (or to taste), one clove minced garlic and some finely chopped parsley.

on 10/14/2008 What a dumb site. Those are not steps, they are (some of them) options. Can you clarify?

on 4/11/2008 Gee, are you supposed to do ALL those cooking methods? Or are steps 6, 7 and 8 just alternate ways of cooking them?
