How to Store Summer Squash

Despite their name, summer squash is available year-round, and when stored properly, they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

    Avoiding washing summer squash before storing.

  2. Step 2

    Put summer squash in plastic bags.

  3. Step 3

    Keep in refrigerator vegetable crisper.

  4. Step 4

    Store most varieties for no longer than 5 days; squash varieties with thicker skin, such as chayote, can be stored up to 2 weeks or more.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't need to peel or remove seeds from squash unless it has a thick skin or big seeds, as the chayote variety does.
  • Skinning summer squash removes all of its beta carotene.
  • Be careful to only peel chayote squash under running water - its skin has a sticky substance that may burn or numb you when peeled.
