Canker sores are painful lesions that can occur inside the mouth. Though it's not known exactly what causes them, they are thought to be triggered by stress, mouth injury, nutritional deficiencies, menstruation and genetic factors.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chap-Stick

  1. Step 1

Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, and floss daily.

  2. Step 2

Use toothpaste without sodium laurel sulfate, which has been implicated in aggravating canker sores.

  3. Step 3

Avoid mouth trauma. Don't bite the insides of your cheek, and avoid exposing the lining of your mouth to sharp objects, including hard-bristled toothbrushes.

  4. Step 4

Avoid foods that are believed to trigger attacks. Chocolate, salted nuts and potato chips may contribute to canker sores, though there is currently little authoritative evidence of this.

on 6/29/2009 I used to suffer horribly from canker sores -- every time I accidentally bit the inside of my cheek, I knew I was in for a week of agony. Then I learned that a lack of L-Lysine can make one more susceptible to the little nasties. If you don't eat a lot of foods containing L-Lysine (red meat, cheese, legumes, etc.), try a supplement; it might help you as it did me. Good article, informative comments... thanks!

on 4/17/2008 I just got the laser treatment yesterday. I thought my dentist was pulling my leg when he told me about it! I wasn't that impressed, but mine was almost better, so I guess it just wasn't worth it. It stopped hurting right away, but it turned the tissue red then purple and looks much nastier than the canker sore itself. Also, it hurt sooooooo badly when he was doing it, and dead tissue seemed to peel off later in the day.

I think it seems like a really good thing if you use it early on, especially on severe ones. I don't think it's worth it if yours is already 5 days in and almost better.

Also, I like to use the Sensodyne in the blue box. It doesn't have SLS, though I think the one in the green box does. It's cheaper than Rembrandt and foams nicely. I can get it at Costco.

on 1/14/2008 Licorice and BHT are the two things to AVOID getting them from now on. GA extract from Licorice is better for those with high blood pressure. Both are cheap and neither are a Miracle pill/cream. Do the research online (Science Journal America) and LicoriceBHT.com has a compilation of articles. Dont treat the outbreak.. end it.

on 9/25/2007 Canker sores are caused by an autoimmune malfunction. Your antibodies mistakenly start attacking the inside of your mouth.

There is an undeniable relationship between smoking and canker sores. Somehow, smoking helps to lesson their severity and decreases their frequency. In some cases, it stops them entirely. Smoking inadvertently stokes your mouths natural defenses and/or short circuits the auto-immune attack. I personally smoke cigars occasionally to keep them at bay. It works for me. Anything is better than the pain.
