Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Determine if your pet is infected with tapeworms. Look for evidence of tapeworms by inspecting your pet's rear end and stool: tapeworm segments are small, white and flat, resembling grains of rice.
Step2
Avoid using over-the-counter de-wormers. Most of these products do not contain the ingredients necessary for killing tapeworms.
Step3
Make an appointment with your veterinarian to get your pet de-wormed.
Step4
Know that treatment is simple and in most cases extremely effective. Your pet will be given either a drug or an injection that kills tapeworm and doesn't cause side effects.
Step5
Understand that controlling fleas is important for managing and preventing future infection (see the related eHows "Prevent Worms in Dogs" and "Get Rid of Fleas.")

on 4/13/2007 At our animal shelter, the vet uses Valbazen to worm dogs. To effectively eliminate tapeworms, hookworms, round worms, and whipworms in dogs and puppies, treat them with "Valbazen" (Abendazole) liquid cattle / sheep wormer 2 days in a row. Retreat in 21 days. Do not use this on pregnant dogs. This wormer is available at any feed store and is highly recommended by dog owners for over 25 years. It is recognized by vets to be effective. Adult dog dosage is 1 cc per 10 lbs of body weight. The puppy dose is 1/10 of cc per 10 lbs. of body weight. This wormer can be used on the mother dog and pups. The recommended worming schedule is 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15 weeks of age for pups and 2, 3, 4 weeks for the mom. This wormer also prevents and kills Giardia parasites.
Another type large animal wormer called Safeguard (Panacur) is widely used by breeders everywhere to successfully worm dogs. Do not use on pregnant dogs. Try 1/10 cc. per 10 lbs. on pups and 1 cc per 10 lbs. on adults. This must be used 3 days in a row and repeat in 21 days.
Both of these wormers are slightly more expensive, but worth it if you have a large number of dogs.

on 3/16/2006 One dose of praziquantel (sometimes sold under the brand name Droncit) in tablet form will usually cure a tapeworm infection in a cat. The tablets are sold 3 to a bottle for around $15 online. You may have trouble finding them in brick-and-mortar stores, even the pet specialty places, but they're plentiful online. Also, be aware, tapeworms most often come from fleas, so don't let your cat get fleas.

on 3/13/2006 Deworm with either Drontal Plus for dogs or Drontal for Cats. Deworm 3 weeks later and then a month later to break the life cycle.
