Replacing an existing dead bolt, whether for security or
mechanical reasons, is a relatively easy job. Once you buy the
lock, you can complete the task with a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring Tapes
  • Chisels
  • Deadbolt Locks
  • Drill Bits
  • Screwdriver Sets
  • Variable-speed Drills
  • Drill Bits
  1. Step 1

Take the old dead bolt out of the door by using a screwdriver to remove the screws on the inside panel of the lock. Be sure to note how the lock comes apart.

  2. Step 2

Grasp the inside and outside pieces of the lock face.

  3. Step 3

Pull them away from the door.

  4. Step 4

Remove the screws from the lock-mechanism plate, which is on the edge of the door.

  5. Step 5

Measure the diameter of the hole in the door, or take the old dead bolt to the hardware store or lock shop to ensure that you purchase the proper-size replacement.

  6. Step 6

Place the new locking mechanism in the hole on the edge of the door.

  7. Step 7

Use the screws provided to attach the plate to the door edge.

  8. Step 8

Work the inside and outside halves of the lock cylinder into proper alignment. Secure them to the door with the screws provided.

  9. Step 9

Be sure that the bolt plate on the edge of the door is flush-mounted with the surface of the wood. Sometimes the hole for the plate will need to be enlarged slightly with a wood chisel.

  10. Step 10

Test the lock a few times from both the inside and the outside to ensure that it has been assembled properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some models may be a bit more difficult to replace due to mounting brackets or slightly different assembly. The process of removing the old dead bolt can make putting in the new unit that much easier, so remember the steps.

on 11/22/2005 To properly align strike plate with latch, extend the latch and put lipstick around the outer edge of the latch. Retract the latch. Close the door, and extend the latch. Open the door and the lipstick will mark where the strike needs to be placed.
