1. If you have a rental car, leave it at your hotel and hail a cab.
2. In the cab, tell the driver the type of place, but not any specific place, you want to go to.
3. Use detailed terms: "a place to drown my sorrows in cheap gin," "a snobby fern bar," "a place with a mechanical bull," "something classy with swing dancing and a dress code," "a good place to eat ribs and watch demolition derby," "a sports bar."
4. Ask the cabbie to wait at your destination.
5. Check the place out.
6. If it's way off what you want, pay the cabbie, tip normally, and get a new cabbie.
7. If it's what you wanted, pay double the meter, get the cabbie's card for the ride home, and go inside.

• Cabbies expect tips for suggestions. Don't skimp.
• Guidebooks are always helpful.
• If you aren't comfortable asking the cabbie, ask the desk clerk at your hotel. Ask other members of the staff.
