If you have a rental car, leave it at your hotel and hail a cab.
Step2
In the cab, tell the driver the type of place, but not any specific place, you want to go to.
Step3
Use detailed terms: "a place to drown my sorrows in cheap gin," "a snobby fern bar," "a place with a mechanical bull," "something classy with swing dancing and a dress code," "a good place to eat ribs and watch demolition derby," "a sports bar."
Step4
Ask the cabbie to wait at your destination.
Step5
Check the place out.
Step6
If it's way off what you want, pay the cabbie, tip normally, and get a new cabbie.
Step7
If it's what you wanted, pay double the meter, get the cabbie's card for the ride home, and go inside.
Tips & Warnings
Cabbies expect tips for suggestions. Don't skimp.
Guidebooks are always helpful.
If you aren't comfortable asking the cabbie, ask the desk clerk at your hotel. Ask other members of the staff.
Unless you are staying somewhere famous, avoid the hotel bar.
Have your hotel call a cab or recommend a reputable company.
