Tips & Warnings
Storing apples next to broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, greens or cauliflower could cause these vegetables to spoil faster, since apples give off ethylene gas, which causes faster ripening. (Conversely, you may wish to put an apple in a bag with fruits such as peaches, plums and bananas for the express purpose of speeding up ripening.)

I have used this method to store apples, but have found another method that works much better. Wrap each apple individually in newspaper and store in a cool place. This extends the life of an apple to about 4-5 months. Take one sheet of newspaper and tear into quarters, pile quarters on top of each other (be sure NOT to put color print next to apple), wrap, twist ends, and store in a cardboard box or crisper drawer. -
