Whatever type of apples you choose, keep them fresh by following these simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apples
  • Plastic Bags
  • Plastic bags
  • Apples
  1. Step 1

Avoid washing apples before storing them.

  2. Step 2

Remove any spoiled apples, as they will ruin the rest.

  3. Step 3

Put apples in a plastic bag in the coldest part of the refrigerator, preferably the crisper, or store them in a cool place.

  4. Step 4

Store them no longer than six weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Storing apples next to broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, greens or cauliflower could cause these vegetables to spoil faster, since apples give off ethylene gas, which causes faster ripening. (Conversely, you may wish to put an apple in a bag with fruits such as peaches, plums and bananas for the express purpose of speeding up ripening.)

on 10/3/2006 I have used this method to store apples, but have found another method that works much better. Wrap each apple individually in newspaper and store in a cool place. This extends the life of an apple to about 4-5 months. Take one sheet of newspaper and tear into quarters, pile quarters on top of each other (be sure NOT to put color print next to apple), wrap, twist ends, and store in a cardboard box or crisper drawer.

on 11/22/2005 Place apples in a plastic bag. Put two tablespoons of water in the bag. Place a twister on tight, and store on a shelf of your refrigerator.

on 11/22/2005 Use whole cloves and completely
cover the apple. Put ribbon at
the top. Will last a year or more. Great decorations and
gifts for Christmas. You must
cover apple completely.
