Simplifying is the key!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Rewrite the equation so like terms are grouped together. Example: 2x + 7x simplifies to 9x.

  2. Step 2

    Simplify the equation by adding/subtracting the coefficients of like terms. Example: 3x + 5y + 2x - 6y simplifies to 5x - y.

  3. Step 3

Stack the equations, if you're working with multiple equations, so that all like terms are placed in the same column.

  4. Step 4

    Compute a new equation by adding/subtracting the coefficients of like terms. Example: (3x + 4y - 2z = 7) + (x - 3y + 8z = 1) = (4x + y + 6z = 8)
