You know right away when it's happened - Fluffy has forgotten to use her litter box again. Here's how to get that urine out of your couch or chair upholstery.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Blot stain immediately with paper towels, absorbing as much fluid as possible.
Step2
Sponge stain with cold water.
Step3
Blot again with paper towels.
Step4
Mix solution of 1 tbsp. white vinegar and 2 cups warm water.
Step5
Dab vinegar and water solution on stain.
Step6
Apply a specialized stain and odor removing bacteria/enzyme cleaner, such as "Outright Pet Stain Eliminator," "Pet 'Oops' Remover," or "Stain Gobbler" if the urine odor persists; follow the manufacturer's directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the vinegar solution on a piece of fabric that is hidden from view - under the cushion or on the backside of the furniture.
  • You may want to wear rubber gloves when performing this task.

on 7/23/2008 Interesting tips! I have a very sensitive nose for odors and nothing I’ve used has worked better than the RGF Guardian Air Plug in Plus. I have one in my basement, bedroom, and next to the cat litter box! It eliminates those funky smells and makes me feel good about my house. I’d recommend it to everyone!

on 1/12/2008 An easy inexpensive but effective way to remove pet odor is to apply cheap mouthwash to the item. Rinse with clear water. It gets rid of the odor in clothing, carpet, etc. If washable item, add mouthwash to the washer, allow to soak at least 30 minutes then rinse and wash as usual.

on 1/9/2008 Wow- the baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and warm water works great! I've spent hundreds on different products including Simple Solution and Nature's Miracle, but the home mixture is working great! I mixed my baking soda, splash of water, then enough hydrogen peroxide to make the consistency of thick latex paint, then glooped it on the "affected areas". I scrubbed with a brush, pouring on more peroxide as needed to keep it liquid enough to go into the fibers of the carpet. I don't know if it'll keep them from going there anymore yet, but it sure looks and smells better to me! :) Be prepared with this tip to use LOTS of baking soda (a huge box) and LOTS of peroxide- I used a big bottle and a half. Cheap stuff though in comparison to other things.

on 10/3/2007 If you use frabreeze enough the carpet or furniture will get "sticky". When you walk over it in your socks they kind of stick to it. Eventually the smell will come back, also when the miosture is high the smell comes back very strong.

on 9/17/2006 Cat urine is formidable. But baking soda works. Nothing else I have tried is quite as good. That is if I have something that can be put in a washing machine. Whole box of baking soda to a load. Soak overnight.
