Things You'll Need:
- Men's Casual Tops
- Men's Shorts
- Sundresses
- Women's Casual Tops
- Women's Shorts
-
Step 1
Choose clothing all in one color to give yourself a long, lean look.
-
Step 2
Wear black. It gives a look that is especially slimming.
-
Step 3
Try to avoid shapeless clothing. No one is fooled, and loose clothes often make you appear wider or heavier.
-
Step 4
Avoid tight clothing that will emphasize your heavy areas.
-
Step 5
Choose softly tailored pieces that define but don't constrain.
-
Step 6
Steer clear of horizontal stripes, which make you appear wider, but consider vertical stripes, which make you look longer and leaner.
-
Step 7
Wear blocks of color that draw the eye away from less-than-perfect areas. Wear a red shell or royal blue jacket, for example, to draw attention away from your legs.
-
Step 8
Wear shoulder pads and wide necklines to balance wide hips.
-
Step 9
Choose pants that have narrow or tapered legs to hide a large midsection. Flat-front pants and side or back zippers will flatter your figure, while pockets, pleats and tight pants will only draw attention to your midsection.

on 3/17/2009 As women get older, their shoulders become more narrow thus the need for some padding for a balanced look. The most important thing is DO NOT purchase things that don't fit in the shoulders. Jacket shoulders that hang over the shoulders make you look heavier. I am a tailor and deal with this situation quite a bit. To get a jacket to button, often the shoulders need to be taken in. It always pays to know someone that sews. 5*

on 2/9/2009 Great article. I'm 5'10" and have got heavier over the years but find that boot cut pants give me a much better look that stright leg pants. I still wear shoulder pads, just not the big ones of the 80's & 90's; tiny ones that give a little definition to the shoulder and good posture makes a big difference to the overall look. Thanks.

on 12/4/2008 Shoulder pads are still worn, just not as pronounced as they used to be. They make your shoulders look straighter. I enjoyed reading this. Good info.
