1
Make a list of your usual work, casual and formal activities to get a clear picture of what you need. Carefully consider weather, color, texture and style.
-
2
Choose a palette that flatters your coloring and responds to your preferences and needs. Black, white, browns and grays are great neutrals.
-
3
Make certain that as many items as possible work with one another so you can make the most of your wardrobe.
-
4
Select at least two pairs of slacks that will work at the office and at semicasual occasions. Select black, lightweight slacks and ones in camel or gray wool for an essential foundation (a black pantsuit will give you two ultra-basic pieces).
-
5
Choose a great, classic white silk, linen or pure cotton blouse. A blouse, either under a sweater or by itself, can contribute to a variety of outfits.
-
6
Acquire skirts in neutral colors and various lengths.
-
7
Get sweaters in solid colors and medium weight. One silk and one medium-weight wool will layer or go it alone. A V-neck and a crew neck or cardigan are versatile pieces. Twinsets, currently in vogue, also extend your wardrobe.
-
8
Go anywhere - from the office to dinner to a party - in closed-toe shoes, stacked-heel pumps or quality boots.
-
9
Purchase a basic, beautifully cut trench coat (with a zip-in lining) in black or khaki for smart dressing.
-
10
Consider a shawl in cashmere, if you can afford it, or jersey; each is amazingly adaptable, tied around your shoulders or draped.

Tips & Warnings
Remember to dress up and accessorize with a few good pieces of jewelry and a great handbag. Accessories don't have to be expensive, and they go far to change your look for a variety of outfits.
Scarves, vests, panty hose and belts are often overlooked, but should be included as foundation pieces.
Think "investment" when shopping for handbags, shoes and coats. That's where the money should go.
Be wary of trendy pieces that cost a lot. They're here and gone, but could label you as a trendy dresser. Still, don't be afraid of having fun and creating your own style.
