Remember all those chunks of hair your mother had to chop when you got gum stuck in it? Before you resort to such drastic measures, try the methods below.

From Quick Guide: Women's Guide to Grooming
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Canola Or Olive Oils
  • Ice
  • Ice
  • Combs
  • Plastic Bags
  • Plastic bags
  1. Step 1

Put ice cubes in a plastic bag.

  2. Step 2

Apply ice cubes to gum until gum freezes and hardens.

  3. Step 3

Gently break gum away from the hair.

  4. Step 4

If the freezing method fails, apply a small amount of nontoxic oil, such as canola or olive oil, to hair around gum and to gum itself.

  5. Step 5

Massage oil into hair and gum; leave for 20 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Gently comb out gum. It should slide out easily. If it doesn't, repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to wrap the ice in a washcloth if it becomes too cold to hold comfortably.
  • Some hair may break off when you are removing the gum from it.
  • After the oil method, the gum may be gone, but the oil will remain in the hair for several shampoos.

on 12/19/2008 Last night my 5 year old daughter came to me with a giant wad of gum stuck in her gorgous strawberry blonde hair. I didn't think there was anyway around cutting it, but the oil worked like magic! I'm happy to report she looks gorgous again!

on 11/6/2008 I used the olive oil method after someone on my bus thought it would be funny to stick gum in my hair. Luckily, it was near the bottom and I managed to get most of it out on the way home, but not all. First I tried ice, but not for very long and it didn't seem to be working. Who knows, it might have if I had left it on longer. My mom then put olive oil on my hair, and I let it sit for a few minutes, then my mom just combed it straight out. I recommend olive (or some kind) of oil and a comb. Good luck!! :-)
