Surfing inside the barrel of a breaking wave is one of the best surfing experiences possible. Your first quality tube ride will make all the effort you spent learning to surf worthwhile.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Catch a wave.

  2. Step 2

Stand up and bottom turn toward the unbroken shoulder of the wave.

  3. Step 3

Keep a low stance if the wave is forming a lip in a hollow arc in front of you, so the falling lip doesn't hit your head and knock you off.

  4. Step 4

Lean your weight slightly forward for maximum speed, tuck into the tube and aim for daylight.

  5. Step 5

Lose some speed to let the tube catch up to you if you're riding on the shoulder ahead of the break.

  6. Step 6

Stall by either dragging a hand in the face of the wave like a brake, or leaning your weight onto your back foot.

  7. Step 7

Crouch down into a solid stance as the tube catches up to you and ride about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up the wave face so the tube just wraps around your body.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep low, bending from the knees and waist, unless the tube is exceptionally large.
  • You can often hear the wave's noise change tone to a sort of deep, hollow sucking sound as a wave is becoming hollow behind you.
  • The trick is to know when to stop stalling and go for speed again so you can make it back out of the barrel. If you have to think about it, it's usually too late. Getting in a tube isn't nearly as hard as getting out of one.
  • Surfing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

on 9/7/2006 To get out of the tube, just lean a little forward and don't loose your balance. Go out and try it, but be careful! Surfing is dangerous, don't bite off more then you can chew!
