How to Determine if You're Regular or Goofy Foot

In snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding, you're a 'regular
foot' if you keep your left foot forward, a 'goofy foot' if you keep
your right forward. Here are three ways to tell which you are.

Put forward whichever foot makes you feel the most balanced, controlled and relaxed in that position. Generally, this will be the same for you from one board sport to another.

      • 2

Lie on your stomach on the ground as you would on a surfboard, putting your hands under your shoulders as if you were going to do a pushup. Spring into a surfing or riding stance. Try it first with your left foot forward and then with your right. Whichever stance feels better is probably the right one for you.

      • 3

Have someone give you a surprise shove from behind. Not only will your friend likely enjoy this, but whichever foot you step forward with first to catch your balance is probably the foot that goes in front when you surf, skateboard or snowboard.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Strap your surfboard's leash to the ankle of your rear foot to keep it from tangling with your feet when you stand up.

yvonn64282 - You are wrong. Goofy is right foot forward, always has been and always will be, deal with it. It comes from the fact that skaters have their best foot back for popping and pushing, and if you were left footed and put your right foot in front you were a bit "goofy". You probably haven't heard of mongo stance either. Don't spread your bullcrap here.

i am a regular footed skateboarder and when i started to snowboard the "get pushed from behind test" caused my right foot to go forward which would make me "goofy footed" according to most people/snowboard websites. Seeing these comments have helped me not feel insane. I agree that the dominant foot should be in back, not in front. The sliding in socks test is way more accurate. mystery solved. thanks!

I don't know how many of you are from the 50's and 60's, but the term "goofy footer" was coined when one used their LEFT foot forward on a surf board or skateboard. I used to surf and MADE my skateboards from regular key type skates and a piece of board about 6" wide by 15" long. I don't know about anything about snowboarding, but for surfing and skateboarding, "goofy footer" is LEFT foot first.

This article is wrong. Your sronger foot goes in the back. If you are a skateboarder you push with your back foot so you would want your dominant foot in the back same with snowboarding because you steer with your tail. If your domintant foot is in front you will proably have less control and be more prone to getting hurt.
