How to Maintain a Car at 50,000 Miles

The odometer demons lie! You just bought your car yesterday! How in the world does it already have 50,000 miles? OK, so it's been several years, but it still feels like new. Even so, it's probably time for a good inspection.

Things You'll Need:

  • Automotive Repair Manual
  • Motor Oil
  • Motor Oil
  • Oil Filters
  • Basic Auto Emergency Kits
  • Car Creepers
  1. Step 1

    Perform a general tune-up - check the plugs, plug wires, belts, coolant, filters and timing.

  2. Step 2

    Change the oil and oil filter.

  3. Step 3

    Check the tires for wear. Replace as needed.

  4. Step 4

    Inspect the brakes. Service as necessary.

  5. Step 5

    Change windshield wiper blades.

  6. Step 6

    Touch up any scratched paint or minor body damage.

  7. Step 7

    Check for rust.

Tips & Warnings
  • A mechanic can also check the engine for wear, including its compression, pumps, electrical systems and injectors, and look for any exhaust or oil leaks.
  • Modern cars should perform almost perfectly at 50,000 miles. Many mechanics do not advise a tune-up until 100,000 miles.
