Landing a large salmon, 10 pounds and up, can be difficult: They are too big for hand nets and are so heavy that they snap all but the strongest lines.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Reel salmon in from a boat until it's a few feet away and its head is above water.

  2. Step 2

Hook the salmon right behind head, in the gills, using a gaffing hook.

  3. Step 3

Heave the salmon into the boat.

  4. Step 4

Identify a gentle slope, free of sharp rocks and snags, to pull the fish in when fishing from the shore.

  5. Step 5

    Reel the salmon in.

  6. Step 6

Pull the salmon onto the slope.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a net on salmon smaller than 10 pounds.
  • Use two hooks for salmon larger than 30 pounds.

on 11/22/2005 Use a "cleo" to fish with. Use 8 lbs. Test line for salmon 30 lbs. or under. Cast as far as you can from shore and reel in relatively fast so your cleo is going at a constant velocity. When salmon is caught, tire it out. When it is in closer, don't pull its head out of the water. Gaff or net when the fish is still in the water, fully submerged.

on 11/22/2005 Play salmon until it is VERY tired. Bonk the salmon BEFORE sticking the gaff in. NEVER stick a gaff in an unbonked salmon.
