How to Install a Computer Program Safely
These days, installing a program is usually only as complicated as clicking the Install button. These instructions should work for Windows 95 and 98.

Place the floppy disk or CD-ROM containing the program in the appropriate drive.

Note that most of the time, a window will immediately appear asking if you want to install the program. Click Install.

If a window doesn't appear, open the Start menu and select Settings, then Control Panel.

Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

In the top part of the window that appears, click Install.

Tips & Warnings
To install a Windows 3.1 or DOS program in Windows 98, open the Start menu and click Run. In the box that appears, click Browse, then find the program or its installer.
Don't install older utility programs not designed for Windows 98 - they may corrupt your system.

Many DOS and Windows 3.X programs will not work in Windows 95 and later. In fact, some of them will change things so that you have to reinstall Windows. -

Before beginning any installation close all programs. Use Ctrl+Alt+Del to see what's running in the background, and click End Task to close them. -

Make sure, if you're installing a newer version of a program you already have, that you UNINSTALL the older previous version first. -

SOME programs will automatically update older versions of the same program, but many will not. If they install rather than update, delete the older version first. Check the documentation that comes with the program before installing.
