How to Remove Amniotic Membranes From Newborn Puppies

If the mother dog has not removed the amniotic membrane from the puppy within one to three minutes after delivery, intervene and remove the membrane yourself.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Clean your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

  2. Step 2

    Gently separate the amniotic sac from the puppy, being careful not to pull on the umbilical cord.

  3. Step 3

    Discard the sac.

  4. Step 4

    Place the puppy in a clean towel and rub vigorously.

  5. Step 5

    Use a soft, blunt-ended rubber air bulb to gently suck fluid out of the pup's mouth.

  6. Step 6

    Remove the umbilical cord (see related eHow).
