How to Waterproof a Deck

Love the beautiful color of wood on your deck? Then preserve it by finishing and waterproofing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  • Gloves

  • Chemical Cleaners
  • Rags
  • Rollers
  • Stiff Bristle Brushes With Long Handle
  • Wood Sealer
  • Rags
  • Airless Sprayer
  • Safety Glasses
  • Safety Glasses
  • Rollers
  1. Step 1

    Clear deck of all dirt and debris.

  2. Step 2

    Cover area surrounding deck with drop cloth.

  3. Step 3

    Apply sealer using a sprayer or roller.

  4. Step 4

    Remove puddles of sealer by brushing it evenly across the deck.

  5. Step 5

    Let sealer set for 15 to 30 minutes.

  6. Step 6

    Clean your equipment.

  7. Step 7

    Dispose of empty containers according to local disposal regulations.

  8. Step 8

    Let the deck dry for 48 hours before walking on it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always read and follow manufacturer instructions for applying sealer to your deck.
  • Wear safety glasses, long sleeves and gloves for protection.

on 7/27/2006 When I find places on my deck that tend to retain water (low/cupped spots) I drill a small hole in the center of the puddle to let the water drain through the deck. 3/16 to 1/4 inch holes are sufficient. The holes don't effect the appearance of the deck significantly, and they should help retard the weathering of the deck.
