A spinning rod allows anglers to cast a lightweight lure to a greater distance than is possible with other kinds of rods.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly-fishing Wading Jackets
  • Backing/fly-fishing
  • Fishing Fly Box
  • Fishing Fly Kit
  • Fly-fishing Flies
  • Fly-fishing Leaders
  • Fly-fishing Lines
  • Fly-fishing Nets
  • Fly-fishing Reels
  • Fly-fishing Rods
  • Fly-fishing Vests
  • Lures
  • Spinning Rods
  • Waders
  1. Step 1

Choose the length of rod. Ideal for bass and trout, for example, is a 6 to 7 foot rod weighing about 4 to 5 ounces.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the rod handle fits snugly in the palm of your hand.

  3. Step 3

Check the rod action - the amount of movement the rod has when casting. You do this by holding the rod in your hand and flipping the tip as if casting. The tip should not have a lot of movement, as most of the action in a spinning rod is in the center and toward the butt end of the rod.

Tips & Warnings
  • The farther away from a fish's hiding place you can stay, the less chance of the fish seeing your shadow or feeling the vibrations from your steps.
  • The type of lure being cast will determine the placement of the reel on the spinning rod. For heavy lures, place the reel forward on the handle; for light lures, place the lure back on the handle.

on 11/22/2005 Quality spinning rods and reels are relatively inexpensive. So as a beginner you can get a good deal on a spinning outfit and you won't need to upgrade once you become more advanced.
