How to Decorate a Thanksgiving Tablescape
A tablescape is an artistic arrangement of items on a table. The table may be decorative, used only as part of the tablescape, or it may be a dinner buffet table. While some tablescapes are meant to be permanent parts of a home's decor, they can also be created for each season or for specific occasions. Use warm, rich colors, gourds and baskets to create a Thanksgiving tablescape. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Begin with an attractive table and a good location. The tablescape should be the focal point of the room.
-
2
Create a background by hanging a photo, painting, mirror or other flat object behind the table. Good choices include paintings of trees covered in red and gold leaves, photos of children in a pumpkin patch and mirrors with fall-themed wooden frames. If your table isn't set against a wall, create a background with an arrangement of dried flowers or branches in a vase.

Choose an odd number of objects in various sizes to arrange on the table. Take care not to crowd the table. Some examples are cornucopia, candles in fall colors or those that include fall leaves and acorns in the wax, and small figurines of pumpkins, turkeys or other items associated with autumn and Thanksgiving.
-
4
Arrange the objects to form a middle ground and foreground by placing larger objects toward the back of the table and smaller objects in front. Don't make the arrangement symmetrical.
-
5
Use hardback books to elevate some objects on the tablescape. Look for history books covering the period of the first Thanksgiving, books about wildlife seen in autumn or cookbooks depicting Thanksgiving meals on the cover.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that the tablescape is meant to be viewed as a whole, rather than one object at a time. Step back to view your arrangement and make adjustments based on what you see from a distance.
If your tablescape is on a dinner or buffet table, give equal thought to the tablecloth, dishes, glassware and utensils. Consider also decorating the chair backs.
Consider building your tablescape along one side of the dinner table, then seating your guests along the other three sides.
The key to an interesting tablescape is to create a lot of contrast in the textures and sizes of the objects while keeping to a common color theme.
