How to Make Metal Squid Fishing Lures

Squid fishing is a popular and exciting outdoor activity that the entire family can enjoy. You can fish for squid at jetties, from boats or even from rocky shorelines. As you fish for squid, you might discover that squid prefer some lures more than others. Although you can purchase squid fishing lures in the majority of tackle stores, you might find it more productive to design your own fishing lure from metal.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with a piece of metal that is shaped like a small spoon. Make sure that the metal you choose has a chrome finish because this lustrous metal attracts more squid.

    • 2

Insert a welded ring at the top of the metal fishing lure. You can attach fishing line to the lure through this ring (see Resources).

    • 3

Attach a brightly colored jig at the bottom of the fishing lure because bright colors tend to attract squid. Pink and orange jigs are best to use in the summer months and blue and green jigs are best to use in the winter months.

    • 4

Use a long fishing rod and about 8 to 10 lbs. of fishing line. Make sure that the fishing line you choose is strong enough to support the lure.

Tips & Warnings

  • When fishing for squid, try to find an area with very clear water and a gentle current. These are the most ideal conditions for catching squid.

  • The ideal time to fish for squid is early in the morning. At this time, these creatures are at their peak of activity.
