Magic tricks are fun ways to impress friends, serve as icebreakers in social settings and help kids feel at ease. Passing a coin through a hand is a particular favorite for kids and they like to see it performed repeatedly. Learn how to do this trick and become the hit at every birthday party on the block.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay your hands flat on a table with the coin in the middle. Flip your hands palm up then palm down again to show the audience that you have no hidden coins.

  2. Step 2

Grab the coin with the right forefinger and thumb, making a big effort to show the audience the coin and rub it on the outside of the left hand closed in a fist.

  3. Step 3

Open the left hand and show them that no coin passed through and it's still in the right hand. Keep the coin near the fingertips, but visible to the audience. Make up some excuse as to why the coin didn't go through, maybe saying something funny to make people laugh. Pick up the left hand and blow on it or ask a volunteer to tap it lightly. The point should end with the fact that you need to try again.

  4. Step 4

Put the left hand into a very loose fist, but leave the forefinger and thumb open so there is a hole, and tilt the hand slightly so the opening of the fist faces upward.

  5. Step 5

Pretend to hold the coin again between the finger and thumb of the right hand. In actuality, you must slide the coin from the fingertips to the inside of the hand, held loosely with the pinky and ring finger while still keeping the fingers positioned as though they are grasping something.

  6. Step 6

Drop the coin from the right hand into the left-hand opening between the first finger and thumb as your right hand passes over it in the charade of rubbing the coin on the top of the hand. Practice this slight-of-hand portion in front of a mirror to see how it looks from all angles.

  7. Step 7

Finish the trick by opening both hands palm up again, this time showing how the coin is truly in the left hand palm rather than the right.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, fancy hand movements distract the audience and disguise what is really happening.
  • Use the smallest coins possible, preferably a dime. Not only are they light, but also their size makes them easy to conceal.
  • Learning how to do a few good magic tricks to keep them up your sleeve is handy in lots of situations.
