How to Buy Finches

Many people who have busy lives buy unconventional pets to fit their lifestyle. Finches make good pets because they are easy to care for and provide amusement and entertainment. Finches are relatively low maintenance and a good choice for those with a hectic schedule.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Determine which physical attributes you desire in a finch. Decide if you want to buy a singing finch. Choose Green Singers and Strawberries if you want to hear a cheerful bird chirp and call. Also decide what color you prefer but know that bright colored finches generally sing less than finches with darker and more monotonous colored feathers.
Step2
Pick an alert finch when you go to purchase your new pet. Withdrawn and inactive behavior are indicative of potential health problems. A finch that sits up tall and is responsive is generally a healthy bird.
Step3
Take note of the bird's beak. A crossed or overgrown beak means the bird is unhealthy. Your finch should have a strong and well formed beak. Also, the claws should not be overgrown. It is okay if the finch's claws are in need of a trim, but they should not be grossly overgrown.
Step4
Look for neat and clean feathers, although it is okay if they are tattered. A finch will lose feathers as he scales the walls of the cage. The feathers will return after a molt.
Step5
Observe a finch's eyes and nasal passages to ensure they are clear. Any kind of mucus means the bird is unhealthy and would not be a wise purchase.
Step6
Be ready to take care of your finch for an extended amount of time. Most finches live 5 to 9 years.
