A tornado can disrupt more than just your life. It can change the entire community you live in. Being able to get news about your neighbors and information about what to do after a natural disaster are key elements in the recovery process. The most popular way to get information is through AM radio, as this powerful signal can reach people anywhere in your area.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Keep a battery-powered AM radio in your basement at all times and use it only for emergency. If there is a tornado, you will most likely be in the basement, the safest part of your house. So keep a "crisis" radio down there in a place that you can easily access.
Step2
Note your emergency station. At least one AM station in your area participates in the national emergency broadcasting system. That system is regularly tested by the broadcasting of a loud tone, followed by a recording that directs you to switch to a specific emergency station. Tape a label with the call letters and name of that station to your radio.
Step3
Move outside once you are positive the tornado has passed. Find a clear space in your yard or in the street, so that you can get the best reception for your AM radio. Large buildings may dull the signal from AM stations.
Step4
Tune your radio to the emergency station. If you can't find it, or it's not broadcasting. slowly search the bands for a news broadcast or local talk radio show.
