Renting a car, whether for business or pleasure, can be a cumbersome experience. Aside from the other factors of renting a car, such as age requirements, driving records and deposits, you can also be judged on your credit history. Here's how to rent a car when you have bad credit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Know your credit score and history. This is something that's good to know always, but definitely, if you want to rent a car, know where you stand before you approach the rental company. Get your credit report and scores online from Equifax or another credit bureau.
Step2
Have your credit card handy. Most major automobile rental companies require a reservation and possibly even a deposit, to be made with a valid credit card. No cash or debit cards are accepted. If you have bad credit and can't get a credit card, consider a secured credit card.
Step3
Offer an extra deposit or get someone to join you on the rental contract. You may be able to offer an additional or larger deposit for the company to work with you. You may also be able to have an additional, more credit-worthy person on the contract with you.
Step4
Work with a specific rental agency. Ask what their guidelines are regarding credit. Hertz will accept a debit card if you have the funds available for the proposed rental fees. Rental fees are not only the fees you will pay to rent the car, but also possible additional fees for mileage, damage or extra days.
