How to Use Excel's ISNUMBER Function
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that enables users to compile and calculate large amounts of data. Beside data calculation and computation, the system also contains functions, such as ISNUMBER, which interpret cell values.

Open the Microsoft Excel software program. Select the "Start" button from the operating system menu and click on "Programs" or "All Programs," depending on the operating system. Next choose "Microsoft Office" on the program menu and click on "Microsoft Excel" to open the Excel program.

Select a spreadsheet file to use with the ISNUMBER function. Click on "File" from the main Excel menu and choose "Open" from the file menu. You can just enter random data in a blank spreadsheet to use as an example, but it is best to choose an existing spreadsheet with data included already.

Click on any blank cell in the spreadsheet in which you want to place the output from the ISNUMBER function. Position the mouse cursor over the cell and left click the mouse button.

Type the following in the spreadsheet cell you selected in the previous step: =ISNUMBER(insert cell). If you want to use the ISNUMBER function on cell C4, the formula would look like this: "=ISNUMBER(C4)."

Press the Enter key on the keyboard to see the results and use Excel's ISNUMBER function. It either will be TRUE or FALSE.
