When a person competes in a mixed martial arts tournament, safety is of primary concern in this violent sport. One of the primary aspects of safety is the taping of the wrists for mixed martial arts tournaments of the fighter. You can't just tape the wrist however you want: there are rules in MMA that govern the taping of the wrists.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft gauze cloth
  • Surgeons tape
  1. Step 1

Tape the wrist of the mixed martial arts fighter in the presence of an inspector and the manager or assistant manager of the fighter's opponent. This is to make sure that there is nothing underneath the gauze and tape. Also, do not put on the fighting gloves without undertaking the proper taping inspection procedure. If you do you could risk disqualification from the tournament.

  2. Step 2

Use soft cloth gauze to wrap the wrist with the total length of the gauze being no more than 13 feet in length for each hand. In addition, the gauze can't be wider than 2 inches.

  3. Step 3

Apply surgeon's tape over the gauze to hold the gauze in place during a mixed martial arts fight. This tape can be a maximum of 1 inch in width and 10 feet in length for each of the fighter's wrists and hands.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that the taping crosses the back of the hand only twice as you are applying the surgeons tape up from the base of the wrist. The tape may cover the knuckles for protection when the fighter clenches his or her fists.

  5. Step 5

Verify that the taping covers each hand evenly so that there is no area of either hand where the taping is uneven.
