How to Create a Character in Tales From the Floating Vagabond

Tales From the Floating Vagabond is a somewhat obscure game that straddles the more traditional beer-and-pretzel game genre and that of true role-playing. This combination can make character generation, as well as game play, dizzying. Wet your whistle on character creation through this simple guide.

    Instructions

      • 1

Get serious about being silly. Think hard about what kind of things make you laugh or make you want to point and laugh. If you want to parody a certain space opera, for example, you could make a Nerf smuggler who was tricked by an old man into trick-or-treating on a space station.

      • 2

Write down your ideas in a paragraph. Don't get too deep about it or your character will lack the flexibility you'll want for making up details as you go along.

      • 3

Distribute your points among your stats according to what you want your character to be like. Six is the upper most value for a stat, while three is considered average. Since you've got to put at least one point into each attribute, go ahead and take 8 points and place them, then modify.

      • 4

Pick a schtick. Since this is going to cost from your skill points, you want to consider what's most appropriate to your character and will see some use during the game.

      • 5

Select skills from amongst all of the ones in your head as well as those in the book. If you don't see it, don't forget to point it out to the bartender (your Game Master) before actually spending points on it.

      • 6

Roll four 10-sided dice and multiply the sum by the smarts, common sense or luck attribute. This is your starting cash. Most adventures will make sure that you have the gear you need, so don't sweat this part too much.

      • 7

Equip your character with stuff that fits within his idiom. The game book offers quite a few sci-fi and fantasy genre staples, but don't let anything stop you from having what you need. Whine, wheedle and plead with the bartender until she gives in.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Your decision as to which species your character will be will possibly effect attribute or skill cost. Consult your bartender before doing your stats.

    • Remember the "tales" part of "Tales from the Floating Vagabond" during character creation. Serials are great material to draw from (like Flash Gordon).
