How to Join AOL Military Pen Pals

AOL offers several different military outreach efforts including an email news alert service where you specify the military branch and division for which you want news alerts. AOL also maintains a military pen pal message board where both members of the military and civilians can advertise for and initiate pen pal relationships. Instructions

1. Join AOL if you're not already a member. You can only access the message boards if you have an AOL membership.

2. Log on to the AOL message board website. Sign in to your AOL account.

3. Type "Military pen pals" in the search box on the right side of the screen beneath "Search Message Boards For" and hit "Return." You're taken directly to the Military Pen Pals message board.

4. Select a post from the list provided down the left side of the screen. Click on the chosen post.

5. Go to "Subscribe to This Thread" and subscribe to the message board. Click on the "RSS Feed" button, the "AOL Alerts" link or the "Add to My Boards" link to reach the message boards.

6. Browse the message board posts and look for someone asking for a pen pal and post a response to that person to start up the pen pal relationship. Another option is to post that you're looking to be someone's pen pal and wait for someone to respond to your offer.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep personal information to a minimum until you've been writing to your new pen pal for a while and are comfortable with releasing such information.
