A nervous, upset dog in the car can be a danger to both you and the dog. If you've already tried the regular training tips to help your dog get used to the car, you may need to think outside the box a little to help your dog overcome his nervousness.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Tire your dog out before your car ride. A long walk or play session can help dissipate some of the energy that your dog has and help him calm down. This can also help you when you want to work on car training as well.
Step2
Take your dog to enjoyable places in the car. If the only place that you ever take your dog to is the vet, your dog may associate the car with bad experiences. Try going on positive car rides to places that your dog will enjoy.
Step3
Record the sounds of the car and play them for your dog in other places. This can help if the sound of the car makes your dog scared. Gradually increase the volume and praise your dog if she remains calm.
Step4
Try using aromatherapy or natural means of calming your dog. Some people find that products like Bach's Rescue Remedy can help calm their dog down in situations where they are nervous or anxious. You can also try spritzing diluted lavender oil in the car, as the scent is often calming.
Step5
Talk to your vet about your dog's nervousness. In extreme cases of anxiety and in situations where you have to transport your dog, your vet may be able to prescribe medications to help calm your dog down.
