The crank of a bicycle is the mechanical device that changes the motion of your legs moving around in circles into moving the wheels on your bike. If you notice your bicycle crank is not functioning properly or if you see that your bicycle crank is broken, you should change it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wrench
  1. Step 1

Locate the crank mechanism on your bicycle. It is the large piece that includes a chain that makes your wheels go around.

  2. Step 2

Remove the crank arm's bolt from the mechanism. You can usually do this with a socket wrench.

  3. Step 3

Take the crank off your bike's spindle. It may be rather difficult to get it off, but if you shimmy it a little, it should slide off.

  4. Step 4

Shine up the spindle of your bicycle. Rarely do you get a chance to give this part of your bike a thorough cleaning. Wiping it off with a clean towel will do the trick. Grease the spindle up to prepare it for the new bicycle crank.

  5. Step 5

Place the new bicycle crank onto your bike. This should slide on just like you took the old one off. Because you greased the spindle, sliding it on should be somewhat simple.

  6. Step 6

Install the bolt back on the crank arm. Tighten it and your job is done. Repeat this on the other side of your bike.
