How to Break Up With Your Friend

There are times where it becomes evident that you need to cut a certain friend out of your life. Whether this person hurt you, betrayed your trust or you just realize the friendship isn't working for you anymore, take care when ending your relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Think about your friendship and make sure you are certain you don't want to continue with it. Once you tell your friend that you don't want to be friends anymore, chances are she won't be too happy and willing to take you back if you change your mind.

    • 2

Be direct and honest with your friend. Don't try to avoid him and hope he gets the hint. If you don't think you can do it in person, call him. Your friend deserves the courtesy of a phone call. Avoid breaking up with friends via email or text messages.

    • 3

Give your friend a reason. Whether you just grew apart or she did something to bother you, providing her with a reason will help them move on.

    • 4

Keep other friends out of it. Be mature about the situation. Don't gossip or talk badly about the friend you are breaking up with. If you force your other friends to choose sides, you may not be the one they side with.

    • 5

Set your boundaries and stick to them. If you tell your friend you will no longer accept his calls or emails, don't. If you aren't consistent, you will prolong the break-up process.

    • 6

Leave the door open to a reconciliation down the road if you think you could eventually get over the problems you have with your friend. But let her know you will call if and when you are ready.

    • 7

Allow yourself time to grieve over the loss of the friendship. Even if it was unhealthy at the end, it is still hard to let go of someone who has been part of your life.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your friend is upset about the break-up, you may have to avoid going to the same places for awhile.

  • Be prepared for your friend to be defensive and get angry about the break-up. Remain calm and walk away when necessary.
