1. Talk to your local zoo. Many will arrange overnight field trips where participants are given a behind-the-scenes peek at the animals and their habitats, making this News Year's Eve completely different for everyone involved.

2. Organize a block party. Designate crafts, food and activities to various families in the neighborhood and gather together in a local park or in a shelter to enjoy a family and neighbor-friendly New Year's Eve celebration.

3. Spend News Year's Eve performing community service by handing out snacks and blankets to the homeless in your area. Let your kids see you benefiting society and you'll do far more than entertain them.

4. Create a treasure hunt where teams consisting of parents and kids must return with items, like a balloon from a diner and a photo of themselves with a firefighter. The team that returns by midnight with the most items wins the game.

5. Host a lock-in at your local place of worship. Ask other parents to join you while you and the kids play games, watch movies and celebrate New Year's Eve in a family-friendly atmosphere well away from intoxicated revelers.

6. Set up a street dance. Ask local teens to set up a sound system and designate the largest driveway as the dance floor. Get permission to block the streets to prevent traffic jams and enjoy the evening with family and friends.
