How to Buy a Student Trumpet

Student trumpet players often start with the coronet, as the coronet is both cheaper and easier to hold. Don't buy the most expensive trumpet for a student; instead, ask the music shop to show you an array of instruments. A student's musical instrument will become a part of his life, and as such, it should be able to be held comfortably and have a fine tone.

Instructions

1. Ask the instrumental instructor for a recommendation. Band directors and music instructors are the best source for advice on specific trumpet brands.

2. Sample a variety of trumpet brands and styles. Trumpets have different styles and construction, and trumpets can vary greatly even within the same company's line of instruments.

3. Choose the mouthpiece carefully. Mouthpieces can be purchased separately from the trumpet. The round part of the mouthpiece, known as the bowl, can be shallow or deep and will produce different tones depending upon the style.

4. Pick a trumpet color and finish. Trumpets most often come in a brass or silver. There are also some stylish copper or multi-colored trumpets, but these can be cost prohibitive for a student trumpet.

5. Buy a used trumpet from a music store, band director or pawn shop. Try the instrument first before purchasing. Used trumpets can have pinholes caused by corrosion, or the welds may be loose. Do not buy a used trumpet sight unseen.
