How to Break Up With a Long-Distance Girlfriend

Just because a relationship is of the long-distance variety does not make ending it any easier. Sure there is not much chance of running into the girlfriend at the grocery store or movies, but it taxes a person emotionally just the same. If you want to break up with a long-distance girlfriend properly, you need to follow a few steps to minimize the pain and awkwardness.

From Quick Guide: Dating and Breakups
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Break up with your long-distance girlfriend as soon you make the decision. This may require you do it over the phone, but it is unfair to both of you if you let the relationship linger. Therefore, as soon as you decide the relationship is over, you must get in contact with her and end it so she can get on with her life.

  2. Step 2

Resist the impulse to break up with the girlfriend in person. Not only will this delay the break up, but it can cause you to get cold feet and keep this relationship headed in the wrong direction. Breaking up in person may seem like the right thing to do, but this will only make it worse. Not to mention there is the extra cost of traveling to see the girlfriend just to break up with her.

  3. Step 3

Call to end the relationship during the week and not on the weekend. The weekend may be more convenient for you, but she will have an entire weekend ruined by the news. Try to break up with her on a Wednesday or Thursday. That way she can make plans for the weekend with her friends and family. These friends and family are an integral means of support for her.

  4. Step 4

Be as firm as possible when you break up with your girlfriend. Do not leave any room for miscommunication. Stay away from conditional phrasing like "Well, let's see how we feel in a week." Make the break-up clean and final.

  5. Step 5

Ignore any calls the girlfriend makes for at least two weeks. Answering these calls can only lead to more hurt feelings and possibly resuming the relationship you are trying to end. Just stay away from all contact until you feel there is no chance of resuming the relationship.

  6. Step 6

Change your phone number if the break up is especially contentious. This is a last-ditch effort to cut off all communication, but sometimes ending a relationship requires such a drastic action.
